GREATER AKRON — Local celebrations during Kwanzaa week are planned for the Akron area. Kwanzaa, an African-American celebration of family, community and culture, takes place from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1.
Nia Imani is so passionate about Kwanzaa that her name says it all. Literally. The 55-year-old Columbia native’s name reflects the fifth and seventh principles — purpose and faith — of Kwanzaa, a celebration of family, community and culture from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1 that is deeply rooted in the “first-fruits” celebrations of ancient Africa.
Kwanzaa will end with a trip Jan. 1 to Malcolm X College in Chicago.
I had my first meaningful Kwanzaa celebration with my ex-boyfriend. Sure, we had held presentations for this 44-year-old African American holiday in high school and college, but it became really momentous once I was an adult. Kwanzaa is a seven-day celebration of African principles that takes place annually from December 26 to January 1.
